After disbanding the party the companion will just wander off to either the nearest city or nearest castle you own. After that you can either get him back into the party at your castle, or at a tavern in the city (they'll just join you at no expense). You also gotta give them some short time to do this.

November 18, 2022. The life of a mercenary is not for everyone, and it shouldn’t be yours in Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord. If you have fought too many enemies for a kingdom and feel that it is time to find something different to do, you can easily stop being a mercenary at any point in time.
Defensive sieges were one of the best parts about Warband but these are very hard to come across in Bannerlord. Currently (as of 1.3 and 1.4), the AI only attacks a castle when they have an extreme advantage, which means that if you manage to get into the castle before the AI begins it's siege, you're going to lose the battle.

There are probably better people to answer the question but afaik certain actions (and missions) give you criminal points - too many and you become a wanted criminal with its restrictions - and the criminal points decay a bit

Seems kind of silly that there isn't a contract like Warband. 20 months of being a mercenary. I don't want to fight for the Battanians anymore, but I don't want to lose rep with each and every lord by "leaving" the kingdom. Is this a bug? I'm not part of the kingdom. I'm just a mercenary. < >
